There are many places to go when you decide to take that giant step and get a puppy. From the breeders to the pet shop to the animal shelter, you will find there are plenty of puppies available. Is it better to buy one from a breeder than it is to go to the animal shelter?

Buying from Breeders

Purchasing a puppy from a breeder allows you certain options. If you are planning to go this route, you will need to find a professional breeder rather than just your basic backyard breeder. A professional breeder will consider pedigrees and health histories of the dogs they are planning to breed. They may search back several generations to ensure the puppies from these two dogs will be healthy and without genetic defects.

The professional breeder will strive for more quality in the puppies rather than quantity. So, if you are looking for a puppy that is from a long line of dogs that have been researched for quality and have pedigrees you may want to buy your puppy from a professional breeder. As with any title, there are different aspects that may be considered with the term professional breeder.

Often people get discouraged when buying from breeders because they are so particular about where the puppy will be going. Some even want to check out the home before okaying the sell of the puppy. This can be somewhat frustrating to someone who is just looking for a family pet.

The Animal Shelter

If you are looking for a puppy and you do not care if his parents are registered or not, you may do well to go to the animal shelter. Many wonderful dogs have grown up to be important parts of people's family and they were originally from the animal shelter. This is one way of helping the problem that most shelters have of overcrowding as well.

Sometimes you will find a puppy in a shelter that is actually full-blooded or very close. They may be so close in fact that it is hard to tell. This is an option that can be a very good choice for some. Some of the things they take care of are worms and spaying and neutering. They often come with a free first visit to the vet and this can help you to get started on their immunizations.

The Pet Shop

The pet shop is another place that you might find the puppy you want. Watch these because sometimes they will come from the pet shop with worms and no immunizations. Pet shops do not typically offer a health guarantee and prices are rather high considering you are not getting any of these benefits. Sometimes the puppies are sold at a very young age and practically no education on the care of the breed you are buying is provided.

Regardless of the place you decide to purchase your new puppy, try to make certain it is healthy and alert. Find out if it has had any of the first immunizations that will be needed and if possible, the health of the parents of the puppy is another thing you may want to inquire about.
